Chair Lofgren Reacts to Trump Plans to Suspend Immigration into U.S.

April 21, 2020

“President Trump seeks to distract us from his fumbled COVID-19 response by trying to put the blame on immigrants”

WASHINGTON, DC – Following President Donald Trump's comments that he plans to sign an executive order suspending all immigration to the United States, Representative Zoe Lofgren (CA-19), Chair of the Immigration and Citizenship Subcommittee, issued the below statement:

"President Trump's tweet is an outrageous attempt to divide us and distract us from his abject failures in dealing with the current pandemic. As the disease spreads through our communities, and more than 40,000 Americans have died in the last three weeks, Trump seeks to shift the blame on immigrants.

"This is particularly outrageous given that immigrants are risking their lives for this country as doctors, nurses, home health care workers, restaurant workers, food processors, and farmworkers. We owe them a debt of gratitude, not a patently political and shameless attack in an attempt to divide us.

"President Trump now seeks to distract us from his fumbled COVID-19 response by trying to put the blame on immigrants. The truth is many immigrants are on our front lines protecting us."
