Lofgren Announces Over $180,000 in Funding for San Jose State University to Research Genetic Mutations

July 7, 2022

SAN JOSE, CA – Today, U.S. Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren (CA-19) announced that the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) will provide a $183,125 grant to San Jose State University (SJSU) to research the effect of environmental change on genetic mutations and evolution.

The grant will help fund research by Dr. Sonia Singhal, whose lab utilizes the speed of microbial reproduction to study evolution in just a few weeks.

"I'm proud of the brilliant scientists and their students at SJSU," said Rep. Lofgren. "The innovative research they do lead to medical breakthroughs and new technologies. The research conducted with this funding could improve our understanding of how to combat antibiotic-resistant bacteria and of evolutionary responses to stressful environments."

This funding comes from the NIGMS' Fiscal Year 2022 (FY22) funding. Government funding legislation for FY22, which Rep. Lofgren supported, provided $3.1 billion for NIGMS, a $101 million increase. Rep. Lofgren has consistently supported increased federal investment in scientific research. Rep. Lofgren previously secured a $200,000 grant and $1.15 million in Community Project Funding for wildfire research at SJSU. In May 2021, Rep. Lofgren secured $82 million in COVID relief funding for SJSU, building on $28.8 million in funding that Rep. Lofgren announced in April 2020.
