Lofgren Calls on Israel to Recalibrate Military Strategy
WASHINGTON, DC – Today, U.S. Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren (CA-18) reacted to the latest escalations in the Israel-Hamas war:
“The multiple airstrikes conducted on the Jabalya refugee camp this week presented the world with heartbreaking and horrifying loss of civilian life.
“Israel was viciously and brutally attacked by Hamas, and is engaged in the war started by Hamas. Israel has committed to conduct its war effort in accordance with international law and minimize civilian harm, and yet the current rate of civilian death in Gaza is unacceptable.
“It is outrageous that Hamas is hiding behind innocent civilians in Gaza. The terrorists are continuing to put lives on the line. But that does not remove the obligation for Israel to conduct its defense in ways that prevent civilian casualties and is in accordance with the laws of armed conflict. It is an increased burden when fighting terrorism, but it is absolutely necessary based on the moral and strategic costs of the alternative.
“The Netanyahu government must recalibrate its military strategy to avoid the loss of innocent civilians.
“A humanitarian pause to allow civilians to receive aid – food, water, access to communications, medicine and power – and to allow for the release of hostages is necessary, and, along with President Biden, I urge the Netanyahu government to immediately do so.”
