Lofgren Statement on the Passing of Congressman Esteban Torres
SAN JOSE, CA – U.S. Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren (CA-19), Chair of the House Subcommittee on Immigration and Citizenship and the elected Chair of the California Democratic Congressional Delegation, issued the below statement following the passing of former California Congressman Esteban Torres:
"Our country and state have lost an important leader with the passing of Congressman Esteban Torres. Those of us who had the honor of serving with Esteban have also lost a friend and mentor.
"Congressman Torres was a thoughtful and skillful legislator who never forgot his roots. He experienced poverty and the ills of our broken American immigration system firsthand, but he didn't let that get him down. He used his personal experiences to uplift others and advance the cause of justice for all. His work on the 1986 Immigration Reform and Control Act influences my work to this day. I encourage my colleagues in Congress to join me in honoring his memory by finally enacting meaningful immigration reforms that are true to our American values.
"As an Army veteran, distinguished diplomat, outspoken union leader, and barrier-breaking Latino activist, Congressman Torres leaves behind a legacy that will inspire generations of future leaders. My family offers comfort to his during this time of mourning."
