Lofgren Statement on the Terrorist Attack in Kabul

August 26, 2021

SAN JOSE, CA – Today, Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren (CA-19) issued the below statement on the terrorist attack outside Hamid Karzai International Airport, which killed dozens of people, including 12 U.S. servicemembers, and injured many more:

"Today's attack in Kabul is horrific and heartbreaking. I send my condolences to the families and loved ones of all those lost – our American servicemembers, Afghan civilians, and all those killed or injured in the attack.

"As Chair of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Immigration and Citizenship, I am continuing to monitor the serious situation in Afghanistan closely and carefully, especially pertaining to the protection of our Afghan allies and others fleeing persecution.

"The current situation for those who fear persecution by the Taliban is tragic. Multiple Congressional committees have announced plans to investigate why the Afghan military and government so utterly and quickly failed. While answering this question will be important in the coming days and months, our urgent priority must be the safe and immediate evacuation of Americans and those who demonstrated allegiance to the U.S. during the war or are at risk if they remain in the country.

"Today, we mourn the U.S. military men and women who lost their lives. Their bravery and sacrifices must not be forgotten."
