Lofgren Vows to Protect Social Security on 87th Anniversary

August 15, 2022

Strongly condemns the extreme MAGA Republicans’ proposed plan to end the program that nearly 100,000 people in Santa Clara County rely upon

SAN JOSE, CA – U.S. Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren commemorated the 87th anniversary of Social Security by vowing the protect this critical program in the face of attacks from extreme MAGA Republicans who have proposed ending Social Security in five years.

"Retirees deserve secure retirement benefits after a lifetime of hard work, and I am fully committed to protecting Social Security from Republicans' attempts to dismantle it. Instead of ending the program that our seniors and their families rely on in five years, Congress must continue to increase benefits and make the very wealthy pay their fair share," said Lofgren.

While 99,409 people in California's 19th Congressional District rely on Social Security programs, Republicans, led by U.S. Senator Rick Scott, have unveiled a proposed plan to end Social Security and Medicare in five years. They have also proposed raising taxes on middle class families, which would make it even harder for Californians to prepare for retirement.

Social Security was established on August 14, 1935, when President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the Social Security Act into law. This provided for a new federally administered insurance program for the elderly. It started off as old-age insurance for individuals, but has grown into a cornerstone of American life, providing comprehensive benefits for retirees and persons with disabilities and their families.
