Rep. Lofgren Applauds Coalition’s Effort to End Homelessness
Community Marches on August 27 to highlight Poverty and Homelessness
Representative Zoe Lofgren (D-San Jose) today released the following statement applauding local community efforts to end homelessness and poverty. Local advocacy groups are in a march against poverty and homelessness on August 27, 2007. Coalition groups include: Santa Clara County Collaborative on Affordable Housing and Homelessness; Charities Housing, Sacred Heart Community Services; Catholic Charities; CHAM Deliverance Ministry; Affordable Housing Network; Low-Income Self-Help Center; and, the Neighborhood Housing Services Silicon Valley.
I have long admired the contributions that these advocacy and service groups have made in the fight to end poverty and homelessness, both in Santa Clara County and throughout our nation. As a supporter of both the National Homeless Task Force Act (HR 3385) and the National Affordable Housing Trust Fund Act (HR 2895), I share the concerns about the lack of affordable housing and adequate housing. Recently, the House of Representatives passed the bipartisan Section 8 Voucher Reform Act (HR 1851) which reauthorized the Section 8 program through fiscal year 2012, and updated and improved funding formulas for the program. As the new majority in Congress continues its efforts to address poverty and homelessness, I look forward to working with the coalition and its affiliated organizations to fight homelessness and poverty in Santa Clara County and through our nation.
I applaud those involved in the march for their commitment to addressing our community’s homelessness and poverty, and encourage all of San Jose’s residents to join in.
