Today, Rep. Zoe Lofgren (D- San Jose) called on all Americans to join in celebrating Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, which began on May 1.
“This month is a special opportunity to pay tribute to the contributions of the Asian American and Pacific Islander community, including immigrants, refugees and natives,” said Rep. Lofgren. “More than 13 million Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI) make their homes in the United States, many who live in San Jose. They represent a diverse community of backgrounds, cultures and experience and their unique contributions enhance the fabric of our country.”
“The Asian American and Pacific Islander community is a fast growing group in the United States,” Rep. Lofgren noted. Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders are making valuable contributions to every aspect of American life‹from business to education to science and the arts.
“As we celebrate the significant progress made by Asian American and Pacific Islanders, it is right for us to also take a moment to honor the memory of Congressman Robert Matsui, who made countless contributions to the AAPI community and was a champion for all of America’s seniors,” Rep. Lofgren continued.
“It is appropriate that this year’s theme for Pacific American Heritage Month is ¥Liberty and Freedom for All.’ Despite the great progress that we have made, we still have a long way to go in ensuring equality and expanding opportunities so that all Americans have a chance to achieve their full potential,” said Lofgren. “I join with all Americans in celebrating this rich and diverse culture, and I encourage every citizen to recognize the role of Asian and Pacific Islander Americans and their contributions to our Nation.”
