Washington, DC — In response to the death of San Jose native Pat Tillman, who was killed in action in Afghanistan, US Reps. Mike Honda (D-San Jose) and Zoe Lofgren (D-San Jose) issued the following statement:

“We wish to extend our sincerest condolences to the family and loved ones of US Army Ranger Pat Tillman, a San Jose native who was killed in action in Afghanistan.

At a time when so many Americans are committing themselves to fighting the war on terror, both at home and abroad, Pat has made the ultimate sacrifice.

He was 27 years old.

In May of 2002, Pat decided to join the Army and contribute to our nation’s response to the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. To enlist, Pat turned down a $3.6 million contract offer from the NFL’s Arizona Cardinals, where he played for four seasons after starring in football at Leland High School and Arizona State University.

This decision speaks directly to Pat’s courage, selflessness, and patriotism. Pat walked away from a multi-million dollar sports career to serve his country in the elite Army Ranger unit. Pat and his brother Kevin, also a Ranger, served as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Like so many other men and women currently serving in the military, Pat put his life on hold to give back to his country. Pat has been, and will continue to be, a role model to young and old across the country. He will be greatly missed by the people of San Jose.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and loved ones of Pat Tillman as they come to terms with the loss of this exemplary American.”
