Washington, DC — U.S. Representative Zoe Lofgren (D-San Jose) issued the following statement today regarding the Iraq Resolution (H.Res. 557):

“Mr. Speaker, I support our men and women in uniform and commend them in every way I can for their courage and strength in serving our great country. Yesterday, today, and tomorrow, I will continually express my gratitude and honor our men and women in uniform. But that is not what this resolution is about.

“The President and his Administration made several claims in the last year and a half that Saddam Hussein was very close to developing a nuclear weapon, that Saddam Hussein had stockpiles of weapons of mass destruction, that there were credible ties between 9/11 and Saddam Hussein, and that Saddam Hussein was credibly linked to Al Quaida.

“At the time those claims were made by the President, there was weak or no evidence to support them. We have not found stockpiles of weapons of mass destruction, we have since learned that Saddam Hussein was not in fact imminently close to developing a nuclear weapon, the President has admitted that there is no evidence that Saddam Hussein was involved with 9/11, and there is no credible connection between Saddam Hussein and Al Quaida.

“It is not right to ask us to vote today for a resolution that affirms the President’s decision to wage war in Iraq in order to thank our troops.

“I regret that the Republican leaders of this House have not chosen to work with their Democratic colleagues to craft a resolution that all Members can support. Once again, it is clear that they would prefer to divide this House, and country, for their own political gain.”
